BIOGRAPHY
Negley K. Teeters was a distinguished faculty member of Temple University from 1927 to 1963, internationally respected for his work in sociology and criminology and for his many publications in those subject fields.
Born in Steubenville, Ohio on November 16, 1896, he received his B.A. from Oberlin College in 1920 where he was greatly influenced by Herbert A. Miller, one of the early reformer sociologists. Teeters taught for a year at Ohio State University, where he received his M.A. (1925) and Ph.D. (1931) degrees. In 1927 he joined the faculty of Temple University where he served for 36 years, rising from Instructor to Full Professor, and later Professor Emeritus. For brief periods he also taught at the University of Chicago, University of Southern California, and, at the end of his career at Hartwick College, New York.
His teaching brought him the Lindback Award for distinguished teaching and other awards paid tribute to his contributions to sociology and criminology. In the latter field, his dozen books and 75 journal articles helped to spread greater understanding of those who run afoul of the law and to stimulate an enlightened approach to penal reform. He did not isolate his teaching from practical applications and often became an advocate for particular needs of the criminal justice system. In one notable California case, he and his co-author and longtime friend, Harry Elmer Barnes, became active in the defense of Caryl Chessman, convicted as a murderer and executed in 1960. The Teeters-Barnes correspondence in the Teeters Papers includes various exchanges on their writing of the three editions of New Horizons in Criminology, materials related to the Chessman case, and opinions and data on many other issues in criminology and sociology.
In his last teaching period at Hartwick College, he became interested in business history and its sociological impact, utilizing the resources of the Newcomen Society. Some of the research results of his students in this subject area are a part of the collection.
Teeters died in Oneonta on October 30, 1971.

DONORS
The bulk of Dr. Teeters’ papers came as gifts from him to the Conwellana-Templana Collection, chiefly at the time of his retirement from Temple University. Some additions were received later, after he had established himself at Hartwick College. Further materials came from his widow, Mrs. Ruth Teeters (later Chomsky), in the period soon after his death. A limited number of the later items were gifts of a couple of other individuals, so noted in the inventory (AR 94-9-4, Box #1, Folder 1 and 2).
In 1974, the Curator of the Conwellana-Templana Collection, Miriam Crawford, and Dr. Gene Gressley, Curator of the Western History Collection at the University of Wyoming, where Harry Elmer Barnes’ papers had been given, arranged from the exchange of photocopies of the correspondence of Barnes and Teeters from their respective repositories. Dr. Gressley included in the photocopies forwarded to Temple the detailed Index to the more extensive Barnes Collection at the University of Wyoming, listed here at the end of the inventory.
Literary rights to Dr. Teeters’ writings have been given by Mrs. Chomsky to the Conwellana-Templana Collection. After the exchange of the Barnes-Teeters correspondence with the University of Wyoming, Dr. Robert Barnes and Mrs. Barbara Pilford, son and daughter of Harry Elmer Barnes, did the same for the original letters of Barnes written to Dr. Teeters and now in the Teeters Papers.

Articles, documents, correspondence, chiefly from Harry
Elmer Barnes “… a conglomerate of material on the
Chessman affair which almost defiles description – both the
case and the material actually. “Harry Elmer Barnes was
highly incensed at the way the Chessman case developed
and felt it to be the grossest miscarriage of justice in the
nation’s history, perhaps aside from the Sacco-Vanzetti
case. He hoped to get a manuscript on the case published
and enlisted the services of many persons who were
sympathetic, but it never did materialize. His plan was to
develop the various mss. Into a two-volume work. Through
the years, toward the end, and some time thereafter, he sent
me much material and helped me formulate my “chapter” in
the book. Fortunately I was able to read my material (see
pamphlet) and to get it published in Lucknow, India. I was
unable to find a American journal willing to publish it.
I must admit that much of the data came in one form or
another from Barnes but the theme is mine. “Some day
someone may do a definitive work on Chessman. All of
Barnes’ material, not only on this case, but on all of his
projects, etc. are lodged in the Western history Center, Univ.
of Wyoming. Whoever wants to do work on Chessman
would be prompted to visit those archives.” – June 2, 1970,
