Book Collection
Most published books relating to the Philadelphia area are housed in the general or reference collections in Samuel Paley Library. Approximately 1,500 titles that relate to the history and growth of Philadelphia from 1854 to the present are located in the Urban Archives book collection. Books in this collection must be used within the Archives reading area and do not circulate. All these materials can be accessed through the Library's on-line catalog.Pamphlet Collections
The Urban Archives contains several pamphlet collections. These consist of published and unpublished materials usually received by the Archives along with donated manuscript collections. The Archives as a general policy retains only those pamphlets dealing with Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.
The General Pamphlet Collection contains approximately 10,000 items filed in document boxes and assigned a box/item location number. Separate indices by author and subject are available only in the Archives reading area. The title listing for this collection is available on the Web.
Additions to the General Pamphlet Collection contains pamphlets acquired in the last few years. These materials have not received the extensive processing that was devoted to pamphlets in the General Pamphlet Collection due to staff constraints. The pamphlets received a box/item location number and are only listed under a subject heading. The subject listing for this collection is available on the Web
The Annual Reports Collection consists of annual and similar reports from institutions and organizations mostly within the Greater Philadephia Area. Reports are listed by organization or institutional name with some cross references to the General Pamphlet Collection and annual reports found within manuscript collections. The listing for this collection is available on the Web.
The Free Library Pamphlet Collection consists of about one thousand pamphlets weeded from the Pamphlet Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia which was donated to the Urban Archives. These materials include information about organizations and activities within the Greater Philadelphia Area. The listing for this collection is available on the Web.
