BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Senator Chaka Fattah was born on November 21, 1956 to Sister Falaka Fattah, the founder of an urban Boys Town in West Philadelphia. A product of the Philadelphia School system, he attended Durham Elementary, Shoemaker Junior High School, and Overbrook High School. Fattah pursued his under graduate studies in Economics and Business Administration in the Wharton Community Education Program, sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania and the Community College of Philadelphia. He received his Master’s Degree in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels School for State and Local Government.

Chaka Fattah gained his background in public policy serving as a Special Assistant to the Office of the Managing Director, as a Special Assistant to the Director in the Office of Housing and Community Development, Policy Assistant at the Greater Philadelphia Partnership, and Assistant Director of the House of Umoja.

In 1982, Chaka Fattah was elected to the State House. After serving three terms in the House, Fattah was elected to the State Senate in 1988 winning 90% of the vote. He was elected to Congress in 1994 and reelected in 1996.

Series I. Administration. This series contains organizational charts, mission statements personnel and financial records, notebooks, phone logs, biographical information and travel schedules for Chaka Fattah.

Series II. Correspondence. This series consists of correspondence to and from Chaka Fattah and other administrative staff members. Of particular note is a subseries of correspondence pertaining to various legislative bills as well as numerous occasion cards and invitations.

Series III. Activities. Materials in this series document the various programs supported by the Chaka Fattah Organization, particularly the Auto Insurance Program and Child Development Initiative. This series also includes: election materials such as ward statistics, election results, voter registration and election campaign materials of Chaka Fattah and various other political leaders; Conferences such as the American Cities and the Graduate School Opportunities Conferences ; Inventory projects; Legislative activities; and State budget information.

Series IV. Subjects. This series contains materials on miscellaneous subjects such as abortion, census, criminal justice, education , housing, healthcare and the elderly. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Series V. Organizations. This series consists of files kept by the organization on various public and private agencies. The files are arranged alphabetically by name.

Series VI. Publications. Materials in this series include brochures, newsletters and pamphlets published by the Fattah Organization and other groups on a variety of subjects. This series also includes newsclipping which document media coverage of Chaka Fattah’s political and social activities.

Series VII. Audio-Visual. This series contains several unidentified computer disks and videocassettes from political campaigns of Chaka Fattah and other politicians.

Series VIII. Memorabilia. This series consists of campaign buttons , a Cheyney University school banner and nameplates.

Series IX. Oversize Materials. Materials include oversize posters, election materials, and Pennsylvania resolutions.

Series X. Photographs. Images include portraits and news and group shots of Chaka Fattah at various functions. The majority of photographs are unidentified.

Series XI. Miscellaneous. This series contains one FOLDER of miscellaneous items from 1988-1994, and one restricted file.
