Detailed Collection Information

Historical Note

The City Parks Association was originally chartered May 23, 1888, by the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County to create and maintain open spaces as park areas for the citizens of Philadelphia. The Association works together with city government in recommending large and small parks for the city. The Association has also acted as a trustee for public reservations throughout the In-State Regional area, and it has supported the work of the City Planning Commission.

Through the efforts of the Association, League Island Park was established in 1895, and Tacony Creek Park and Pennypack Park became part of the municipal park system in 1915, In the 1910s and 1920s, the City Parks Association advocated beautifying the banks of the Schuylkill River and encouraged the city government to pass a zoning law. It was one of the first organizations to recognize Philadelphia's need for park and recreational facilities for all sections of the city. Today the Association continues to work for the improvement and preservation of parks, squares, playgrounds and waterways in Philadelphia and surrounding areas.
