Detailed Collection Information

Biographical Note
David D. Shatz, born 1904, was a sprinter and broad jumper at West Philadelphia High School and then the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating in 1926, he worked as a staff sports writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, covering athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. He also worked as an official starter for the Amateur Athletic Union and the Penn Relays. In 1931, he coached the track team at the Peirce School, later renamed Peirce College. Shatz married Esther Kaufman on March 27, 1932. After two months of marriage, David D. Shatz died on June 4, 1932, from typhoid fever.

Description of Collection
The David D. Shatz Correspondence, 1927–1932, 1968, consists of handwritten and typescript letters written by David D. Shatz to Esther Kaufman with whom he had a personal relationship and eventually married. The letters detail Shatz’ experiences away from Philadelphia working as a sports writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, covering training camps and games played by the University of Pennsylvania’s football team. Within the letters, Shatz also writes about his relationship with Kaufman, giving at least some insight into the courtship. Many of the letters contain small drawings in the margins, often illustrating events or emotions being described within. Attached to the letter postmarked September 13, 1928, is a short poem titled, “Forget it, and go on!” The collection also includes a miscellaneous folder containing an invitation for David D. Shatz and Esther Kaufman’s wedding, a photostat of their marriage certificate, a copy of the 1910 Bureau of the Census record for Esther Kaufman, a photocopy of two photographs of David D. Shatz, and a newspaper clipping regarding his death. As of July 2012, the originals of the two photographs and a Shiva card recorded as donated with the correspondence were missing.

Organization and Arrangement
The correspondence is arranged chronologically with the miscellaneous folder at the end.
