HISTORICAL NOTE

"The English-Speaking Union, founded in London in 1918 and in New York the following year, has as its chief aim and objective the interpretation of thought and action of one English speaking country to another for the purpose of helping create a climate of opinion among these peoples in order to make possible the highest degree of co-operation in furtherance of their common ideals and policies". [Quotation from "The English Speaking Union," folder entitled "History of the Philadelphia Branch, 1968," Series I]

The Philadelphia Branch of the English-Speaking Union of the United States was founded in 1920. During World War II the Branch raised money for various activities in England, prepared garments for British children, provided binoculars contributed by members for airplane spotting, etc. Much of the Branch's activities following the war were concerned with student exchanges, scholarships, hospitality, and a variety of lectures. Of particularly interest historically are the files on "Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, 1940-1941" and "Palestine Protest, 1946-1947", both in Series V.
