Father Paul M. Washington Papers

Description:

Father Paul M. Washington (1921-2002) was a major voice for social justice in the Philadelphia area and beyond. He championed civil and human rights throughout his life. The collection chronicles Father Washington’s life long quest for progressive social change. At the core of the collection are Father Washington’s extensive correspondence, sermons, and speeches covering over five decades. Photos, news clippings, and articles add further depth to the papers. Of special interest are the FBI Freedom of Information Files on Father Washington, which center on his civil rights activism and involvement with The Black Panthers in the 1960’s. The collection also contains various draft versions of Father Washington’s autobiography Other Sheep I Have. Also of note are materials concerning the ordination of women into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church and the MOVE conflict.

Biography:

Father Washington was born on May 26, 1921 in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended and graduated from Lincoln University and The Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Father Washington married Christine Jackson on August 23, 1947. They moved to Liberia, Africa (1948-1954) to do missionary work, and eventually helped found Cuttington College. Father Washington returned to the U.S. to become the vicar of St. Cyprians (1954-1962). He became the rector of The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia (18th and Diamond St.) in 1962. Father Washington had many eventful and productive years at the Advocate (1962-1987). During this period he hosted the National Black Power Convention (1968), gave ordination to eleven women into the Episcopal Church (1974), served on the MOVE Commission, and developed many community based social programs. Father Washington received many awards and honors in his lifetime, including the Philadelphia Award in 1986. He published his autobiography, Other Sheep I Have, in 1994. Father Washington remained active in the church and in the struggle for human rights until his passing on October 7, 2002.
