HISTORICAL NOTE

Fellowship House grew out of the Philadelphia Friends' Young People's Inter-Racial Fellowship Committee on Race Relations which Marjorie Penney (1908-1983), Baptist, had been directing since 1932. Fellowship House was not a Quaker organization, although it had Quaker roots and stood for the same non-violent solutions to social problems. Its efforts were directed toward inclusiveness and it reached out especially to groups abused by society as a whole.

Penney opened the first Fellowship House, at 1431 Brown Street, in 1941, to provide an everyday-life setting where people of all colors and creeds could meet, cook and eat, play, pray and study together. Working with extremely modest means, and almost entirely on a volunteer basis, Penney and the people of Fellowship House published newsletters, coordinated regular inter-faith meetings and social gatherings, and created and conducted numerous lecture series and courses which emphasized learning about and understanding differences, and which encouraged cooperation and inclusiveness. Many of these programs were directed toward school-age children and were given at local schools. Fellowship House also acted in the larger city, state, and national communities on such concerns as a federal anti-lynching law, anti-semitism, integrated recreational facilities and open housing.

Fellowship House was one of the earliest non-profit education centers in human relations and social change, and it continues today as Fellowship Farm, situated on a 120-acre farm five miles from Pottstown, PA. During its more than fifty years, its scope of activities and interests steadily widened to encompass all areas of social concerns, especially as these emerged with increased urgency during and after the late 1960s. Penney remained Director until 1968, and was succeed by the Rev. Amos Johnson (tenure 1969-73), Helen Slater Tomkins (1973-79) and David P. Tulin (1979-88).

The first House on Brown Street wassold in 1956 and the operations moved to 1521 W. Girard Avenue. In 1963, Little Fellowship House was opened at 1710 N. 27 Street. In 1951, the Farm was purchased; all other buildings were divested and it became Headquarters in 1973.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

No date ranges, stated on the original folder or added after examination, may be considered inclusive. Any specified range merely indicates that materials of those dates were included in the original file folder. Overlap and duplication occurs in many files in almost all series. Bracketed information on file folders indicates interpolation. Bracketed information on the inventory, following, indicates authorship -- key provided at Correspondence Series. Legal-sized folders are usually placed at the end of any series and have their own alphabetization scheme.

This collection has been organized into 13 series. Arrangement is alphabetical by file title, except in the Correspondence Series which is arranged chronologically. If a number of files within a series bear the same title, and dates, these were arranged chronologically.

Series I. Administration and Organization. This series contains administrative and organization records: Board of Directors' minutes, agenda, reports; Committees agenda, minutes, reports; Staff and Personnel records, including numerous Staff Meeting files; History files, as designated by FH/F personnel, and a small amount of Office Files, containing, for example, "To Do" and unlabeled mailing lists. Board of Directors and Committees files contain a good deal of duplicative and overlapping materials.

Series II. Individuals. This series contains the more personal files of the individuals listed. Although, in each case, documents pertaining to the FH/F will also be found. Here "personal" means related more to that particular person than to the organization. This is especially the case in the sub-series: "Elizabeth Penney," Marjorie Penney's aunt, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, where numerous manuscripts by Miss Penney will be found, as well as newsclippings, holographic correspondence, and notebooks.

The sub-series Marjorie Penney contains day books spanning the consecutive years 1955-1965, as well as several other years. Here, too, is assorted holographic correspondence, notebooks, and some sketches and illustrated works. Under this sub-series will be found a few files pertaining to Victor Paschkis.

The Helen Slater Tomkins sub-series serves as a repository for much material which could not be easily classified and filed elsewhere. What appears to have been Ms. Tomkins' particular style of working -- that is, on numerous tasks simultaneously, and being extremely conservative in paper use -- is reflected here. Much of the material was found unfoldered, but paper-clipped together in a manner distinctly hers; the paper-clips were removed from these "packets" and the materials were foldered together. The researcher is encouraged to peruse these folders as there is much FH/F material and Ms. Tomkins' personal observations and thoughts.

The sub-series A. Herbert Haslam, David P. Tulin, and Amos Johnson contain relatively few files; contents include, respectively, correspondence/program materials, mss and published articles, and biographical material.

Series III. Correspondence. This series is arranged chronologically. A "Subject" list is attached as Appendix A.

Series IV. Activities. The very broadly defined Activities Series contains approximately one-third of the Collections' files. The Programs sub-series contains files on programs of an on-going nature. Many of the FH/F programs had the same underlying structure and arrangements, but were given a "new" name. New directions and very different sorts of programs begin to occur in the mid-to-late 1960s, with the advent of Administrators other than Marjorie Penney.

The Education subseries was created to contain materials of programs that either took place in a school setting, or were directed primarily towards school-age children. The very early "Dolls Library" and "Arrows" program files are found here, along with the later "School Contracts," each "contract" being a sheet bearing a school child's name and date of visit. Biographical Sketches are short biographies of famous persons, run in multiple copies and apparently used repeatedly.

The relatively small Events sub-series contains files on one-time events, such as awards dinners and luncheons to honor a person.

The Music and Plays sub-series house musical scores and scripts.

Series V. Financial. The Financial Series consists of 16 boxes, majority unarranged, which contain bookkeeping and vendor records, cancelled checks, ledgers, time sheets and payroll records.

Series VI. Publications. The Publications Series consists of 17 boxes, majority unarranged, which contain publications by FH/F such as flyers and brochures, as well as articles by FH/F personnel, and numerous publicity and newsclipping files. The series also encompasses many publications by other organizations, including bulletins and newsletters, serial publications such as magazines, and newspapers. There are numerous reprints and articles clipped or torn from publications. Some of the publications appear to have been used as a "reference library," set up by country.

Series VII. Branch Offices. The Branch Offices Series contains the files on other Fellowship Houses and the Fellowship Federation. Files contain correspondence and newsletters, and are arranged by State/City/Year. Federation of Fellowship Houses files, and others, are found at the end of the series, arranged alphabetically.

Series VIII. Other Organizations. The Other Organizations Series files, arranged alphabetically by organization name, contain various materials, including in some cases correspondence, in others newsletters or bulletins or the like.

Series IX. Miscellaneous. This series serves as a repository for several boxes (84-86) of materials found loose or interstitially between files. Another set of boxes (87-88) houses publication printing masters.

Series X. Scrapbooks. This series includes Guest Books.

Series XI. Memorabilia.

Series XII. Photographs. Photographs have been removed to the Miscellaneous Photograph Collection, PC-49, Box 7.

Series XIII. Case Records: Restricted.
