Historical Note
The Philadelphia Union of Jewish Students (PUJS), established in 1969, was a coordinating council of various affiliated student groups funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. During its years of operation, the PUJS was the North American affiliate of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS), an international, umbrella organization comprised of national independent Jewish Student Unions founded in 1924. PUJS worked with student groups from Philadelphia area colleges and universities including, but not limited to Temple University, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and Community College of Philadelphia. As an alternative to Hillel programs, PUJS’ main function was to coordinate integrated activities for the Jewish student population in the Greater Philadelphia area through the hosting of social activities, religious related events and observances, and lectures and speaking engagements by notable Jewish educators, authors, and activists. The Philadelphia Union of Jewish Students acted as a resource center for disseminating information and organizing rallies and demonstrations in support of Soviet Jewry, Israel, and Zionism. PUJS also published the student run newspaper, Hayom between 1971 and 1977. Hayom advertised Jewish related events as local colleges, universities and community organizations, but also presented articles on local and worldwide current events as well as Jewish customs and traditions. PUJS ceased operation in 1977.

Description of Collection
The Philadelphia Union of Jewish Students Records, 1970-1977, document the activities of this defunct student-run organization for Jewish college students. Collection materials include typescripts of articles submitted for publication in Hayom, internal memos and correspondence, meeting minutes, flyers and announcements of community activities, letters to the editor, and press releases. The bulk of the collection is made up of photographs and graphic materials such as drawings and illustrations used in the production of Hayom, and a near complete run of copies of the published issues.  There is a small amount of material in Hebrew, typically words or phrases used in article captions.
