Historical Note
The United Jewish Organizations was incorporated on July 28, 1889 as the United Brothers Beneficial Association/Brith Achim Beneficial Association. The beneficial association is a membership organization, initially for Jewish males, whose purpose is to promote brotherhood and friendship through social activities and provide mutual aid and assistance to members in need. Members are eligible for aid in times of sickness and financial distress. Members also receive death benefits to cover funeral costs in the event a spouse or child passes away. In 1914, the English form of the organization’s name was dropped and the beneficial association became known only as Brith Achim. The name United Jewish Organizations was assumed circa 1974 when Brith Achim merged with Elisavetgrad Beneficial Association, Smeler Untershtutzung Verein, Zwenigorodker Beneficial Association, Sholom Aleichem Pereyaslover Beneficial Association and Kalisher-Stavistisher Beneficial Association.

Collection Overview
The United Jewish Organizations records, 1889–1984, undated consist of a minute book written in Yiddish script covering organization meetings from 1889–1898, constitution and by-laws in both Hebrew and English, meeting notices and the monthly bulletins for members, annual banquet and anniversary programs and souvenir ephemera. The collection shows the diversity of social activities organized and provided for the membership as well as the scope, type and amount of aid disbursed to needy members.
