Historical Note

The Walnut Street Association(WSA) was established in 1905.The purpose of the organization is to improve, protect and advance the interests of Walnut Street Residents and Businesses from the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River.

To carry out these objectives the Association encourages the enactment of State and Municipal legislation that improves the character of buildings within the area; promotes the establishment and maintenance of proper transportation facilities; aids municipal authorities in maintaining proper supervision over the lighting and cleaning of the area; encourages the use of correct architectural designs and discourages the erection of unsightly buildings, signs, and advertising devices; discourage the use of buildings for undesirable purposes; protects property owners from unjust, unfair and unequal taxation; and encourages the preservation and maintenance of buildings of historical interest, and collects and preserves historical documents, data and pictures relating to the Walnut Street area.

The WSA also actively sponsors annual events including the Easter Promenade and Christmas season street decorations.

Series I. Administration. Materials include Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and meeting minutes. This series also contains files documenting the activities of the WSA Board of Directors.

Series II. Correspondence. This series includes general and administrative correspondence from 1946-1980.

Series III. Financial. Materials include bank statements, treasurers’ reports, and invoices and receipts.

Series IV. Membership. This series contains information about WSA membership including correspondence, name lists, membership applications and dues schedules.

Series V. Activities. This series documents the various programs and activities sponsored by or participated in by the WSA. Projects of special interest include the annual Easter Promenade, Lets’ Walk Again, and Christmas season street decorations.

Series VI. Organizations. This series consists of files generated by WSA on various public and private agencies. Files are arranged alphabetically by agency name.

Series VII. Publications. Materials include brochures, newsletters and flyers published by WSA and other institutions.

Series VIII. Newsclippings. Material
s document media coverage of WSA activities and other subjects of special interest.
