Historical Note

The Weccacoe Development Association, Inc. (WDA, Inc) was founded in 1985. The purpose of the non-profit community development corporation is to provide housing for low and moderate-income people, upgrade South Philadelphia neighborhoods by helping to eliminate housing blight through the purchase of existing vacant properties and/or lots and developing rehab housing or new housing units, develop other programs and services, which will compliment this activity and improve the physical appearance of the communities in which they are active by community activists who are most familiar with the Southeast Philadelphia particularly the Whitman area. This part of the City is a stable, working class area of row homes, most of that is owner occupied. There are, however, many scattered abandoned dilapidated houses that cause problems for surrounding homeowners and are blight on the community. For the most part, people who want to live in the area cannot afford to rehabilitate badly deteriorated housing on their own. For private developers, such rehabilitation is not profitable because the cost involved is close to or greater than the market value of houses in the area.
