Temple Libraries' User Education Program
The mission of Temple Libraries' instruction program is to develop information literacy in Temple students, faculty, and staff, enabling them to independently seek, retrieve, evaluate, and use information in order to solve problems and generate knowledge.
The goals of the instruction program are to:
- Provide information literacy-based orientation and instruction to all Temple undergraduates throughout the course of their studies at Temple.
- Support Temple graduate student research with resource-based instruction for their discipline.
- Actively partner with faculty, staff, and University administration to integrate information literacy instruction into Temple coursework and instructional planning.
- Support lifelong learning, ensuring that Temple graduates will use information effectively and ethically to contribute to a diverse, global society.
Information Literacy Standards for Temple Students
1. The student will determine the nature and extent of the information needed.
2. The student will access information effectively and efficiently.
3. The student will critically evaluate information and its sources.
4. The student will use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
5. The student will understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and access information ethically and legally.
Information Literacy and the General Education Curriculum

Contacting your librarian to schedule an appointment for an in-depth consultation. Each academic department or program has a librarian who is the liaison to that program. You may consider the librarian for your major or department to be your librarian.
Taking the TILT tutorial: TILT: Temple Information Literacy Tutorial, formerly known as the Library Skills Workbook, is an online tutorial designed to provide an introduction to searching, accessing, and evaluating information using library resources. Completion of the tutorial IS A REQUIREMENT for students still in the Core Curriculum. New freshmen and all students enrolled in the general education curriculum do NOT need to complete TILT because they receive the same content in two sessions offered for Analytical Reading and Writing.
Using Subject Guides: The library Web site has an extensive array of online subject guides that can help with library research in a number of subject areas.
