Annual Juneteenth Celebration—Black Music: A Conversation with Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, and Vivienne Crawford

Wed, Jun 06, 2018 | 2:00 pm

In celebration of Black Music Appreciation Month, Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, and Vivienne Crawford will join us at the Blockson Collection to provide firsthand accounts of Philadelphia’s rich heritage.

Legendary Philadelphia-based music duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who put Philadelphia soul on the map, are two of the most prolific and acclaimed songwriters/producers in the history of contemporary music. The multiple GRAMMY award-winning duo and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have composed an impressive number of memorable romantic songs. Their superstar roster of artists, including Teddy Pendergrass, Billy Paul, The Ojays, Phyllis Hyman, Patti LaBelle, Lou Rawls, and a host of others, were signed to their legendary Philadelphia International Records. These incredible performers recorded tunes like “Close The Door,” “Let Me Make Love To You,” “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine,” “Me & Mrs. Jones,” and numerous others.

Vivienne Crawford is an attorney in Philadelphia who has been a civil rights activist her entire life. Her mentor was the late Cecil B. Moore and she, like so many others, was grateful to call Sam Evans her godfather.

We hope to see you there!
