At the Blockson Collection: In Conversation with Adrienne Andrews Harris, former parishioner of the Saint Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church

Thu, Feb 06, 2020 | 2:00 pm

Join us for this conversation with Adrienne Andrews Harris. Harris is a former parishioner of the Saint Peter Claver Church, the mother church for African Americans in Philadelphia. The church served African American Catholics since its dedication in 1892, including at times when they were unwelcome at other Catholic churches.

Harris will share stories about the establishment of the mother church for Black Catholics in Philadelphia. She will also discuss generations of her family’s story and the fight over the church’s formal closing effective April 8, 2019 by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

This program is part of the Black Lives Always Mattered! public program series at the Blockson Collection, which is made possible through the support of the PEW Center for Arts & Heritage grant.
