Abram Shnaper, born in Lodz, Poland and raised in Vilna, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1949. Shnaper, a Holocaust survivor of the Klooga concentration camp in Estonia, was a founding member and long-time president of the Association for Jewish Holocaust Survivors, later renamed the Association for Jewish New Americans, and Co-chairman of the Committee for the Monument in Memory of the Six Million Jewish Martyrs. Shnaper married Luba Koenigsburg in 1947 with whom he had two daughters, Sara and Marion. Shnaper died April 28, 2014.
Description of Collection
The Abram Shnaper Papers on the Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs contain correspondence in English and Yiddish, meeting minutes, press releases, and printed material related to the formation of the Committee for the Monument in Memory of the Six Million Jewish Martyrs, the commissioning of the monument sculpted by Nathan Rapoport and its installation and dedication, and the annual Yiskor service at the monument site. The collection also includes one scrapbook of newspaper clippings containing articles from local and national newspapers in English and Yiddish about the committee’s activities and the monument, a guest book for distinguished visitors, and six photograph albums detailing the erection and unveiling of the monument located at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and N. 16th Street, the annual Yiskor service, and related committee events. Notable correspondents in the collection include Nathan Rapoport, Dalck Feith, and Louis E. Seltzer.
