Detailed Collection Information

Historical Note
The American Hebrew Society was founded in 1901 as the Roumanian Workingmen’s Beneficial Association.  The association initially provided Romanian Jewish immigrants with integration assistance, but grew to offer its members social events, sick benefits, and internment planning.  After realizing that the association’s name did not identify the organization as Jewish, the group was renamed the Roumanian Hebrew Beneficial Association.  In 1965, the association changed its name once again to the American Hebrew Society.
