Description of Collection

The collection consists of an annotated unpublished manuscript and brief summary authored by Charles S. Bernheimer titled, “Historical Sketch of the Jewish Community of Philadelphia.” The manuscript was to be included in a book published by The Historical Publication Society in connection with the 150th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. The book had two working titles: The History of the Jews of Philadelphia and The Jewry of Philadelphia. The collection also includes a signed publishing contract and correspondence with the project’s Managing Editor, I. George Dobsevage, Executive Secretary, Alexander Dubin, and others.
