Detailed Collection Information

Historical Note
The Chevra Bikur Cholim is a Philadelphia-based Jewish burial society responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Chevra Bikur Cholim Cemetery. They were founded in 1861 with the expressed purpose to visit the sick, care for the needy, to offer last rites, and bury the dead. The organization opened the Chevra Bikur Cholim Cemetery shortly after its founding. The society is comprised of members who pay reservation and maintenance fees so that they and their families will be buried according to Jewish tradition, and their grave sites will receive perpetual care. Not all society members are buried in the Chevra Bikur Cholim Cemetery. although all of those buried in the cemetery were society members.

Description of Collection
Chevra Bikur Cholim Records consist of materials pertaining to the Chevra Bikur Cholim organization and its management of the Chevra Bikur Cholim Cemetery. Documents include plans for the Chevra Bikur Cholim Cemetery; index cards and photocopies of additional index cards tracking burials, dues, maintenance fees, and reservations; correspondence regarding organization business; several newsletters; two organizational histories; a short run of the Jewish Advancer newspaper from 1919-1920, which was published under the auspices of the Chevra Bikur Cholim and covered news for and about Jewish fraternal societies in the city; and a computer printout of a burial registry. Also included is a microfilm copy of a registry listing burials and plot reservations from 1864 to 1985. The registry itself was created in 1939 and maintained through 1985. Though all of the materials were created in the twentieth century, they include the historical record of the burial grounds dating from its opening through the 1980s.
