Detailed Collection Information 
Biographical Note
In 1914, Sophie Hanover and her six children, Sarah, Harry, Edna, Herman, Willie, and Robert immigrated to Philadelphia from the city of Riga in Russia, now Latvia. Sophie, a wig maker by trade opened a hairdressing parlor at 509 Jackson St. in South Philadelphia. Her son Herman, a hardware store owner, married Ida Gleaner on May 29, 1923 with whom he had three daughters, Leona, Phyllis and Sandra.
Description of Collection 
The Herman Hanover family photographic materials and vital records, 1910–1973, bulk 1920s, include vital statistics records for Herman Hanover including his marriage license to Ida Gleaner and his United States naturalization certificate. The bulk of the collection consists of photographic materials of Herman Hanover, his mother Sophie, Ida Gleaner, and other members of the Hanover family. Among the photographic materials are individual and group portraits, 17 glass slides, predominately images of the Hanover family on vacation in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and exterior images of Hanover’s Hairdressing Parlor.
