Biographical Note
Jack Robert Dichter (1903-1980) was an elementary school teacher, principal, and musician in Philadelphia. Jack married Mollie Prager in 1928 with whom he had two sons, Joel and Scott.
Description of Collection
The Jack R. Dichter Papers consist primarily of popular and Yiddish sheet music and lyric sheets from the 1920s. Sheet music and lyrics written by Dichter and others in the collection include “Why So Blue” and “I Still Believe in You” (Frank Capano, Dichter, and Harry Steinhouse), “I Want You Most of All” and You Remind Me of My Old Girl (Moret Shea and Dichter), and “You Tell ‘Em” (Dichter and Dave Hoffman) as well as many lyric sheets for songs composed by Mildred Greenberg. The collection also includes correspondence, course grades, and other documents pertaining to Dichter’s studies in the graduate program at Temple University’s Teachers College; photographs and other records from the Hebrew Sunday School Society’s Ephraim Lederer School, Ellwood Elementary School, and other Philadelphia public schools where Dichter served as either teacher or principal; correspondence and legal documents related to his ownership of Bob White Day Camp; and a bound manuscript of a children’s story “Bobbie and Anne in Radio Land” written by Dichter and Lena M. Bixler.
