James Dessen basketball photographs
Collection materials contain no text.
James Dessen was born in Philadelphia on June 4, 1907. He attended South Philadelphia High School where he played basketball. Dessen also played basketball at Temple University between 1927 and 1929, while studying law. He coached both the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association basketball teams circa 1930s. James Dessen died in May 1980.
The James Dessen basketball photographs, 1916–1934, undated, consist primarily of team photographs from South Philadelphia High School, the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, and the Young Women’s Hebrew Association basketball teams. Among the photographs is an undated team photo from South Philadelphia High School, sometimes referred to as “Southern” as indicated on the front of the jerseys worn by the players that includes fellow teammate and International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Harry Litwack. One of the photos from South Philadelphia High School predates Dessen playing there. Two of the photographs are group photos of which Dessen is a part, but unrelated to basketball.
