Biographical Note
Born in 1927, Lewis Klein began his career in television in 1950. He directed and produced a wide variety of programs for Philadelphia’s WFIL-TV (now WPVI-TV) Channel 6, including the Sally Starr Show, Romper Room, Philadelphia Phillies telecasts, Stump the Stars, Here Comes the Doodletown Pipers, and Bandstand. He also helped create Captain Noah’s Magical Ark, a popular children’s show.
A founder of the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), Klein also founded the NATPE Educational Foundation. He served on civic boards, including the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia, Cheltenham Art Center, American Heart Association, and Corporate Alliance for Drug Education. He was president of Gateway Communications.
Klein was a faculty member of the English Department of the University of Pennsylvania and has been Adjunct Professor in the Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Mass Media Department, School of Communications at Temple University. He co-authored Broadcast Cable Programming, a textbook.
Klein received honors and awards from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, NATPE, Broadcast Education Association, the Philadelphia Police Athletic League, and Temple University. In 2017, Temple University's college of media and communication became the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication, named in his honor. Lew Klein died on June 12, 2019.
Description of Collection
The Lewis Klein Papers include photographs, newspaper articles, periodicals, pamphlets, brochures and other printed materials, and correspondence relating to Klein’s career in broadcast television and as adjunct professor of communications at Temple University. There is also some documentation of Klein’s involvement with the National Association of Television Program Executives, especially the Education Foundation, the Police Athletic League, among other organizations, and as a fan of baseball.
Organization and Arrangement
The collection is arranged into 5 series as follows:
Series 1: Personal papers, 1948-2010
Series 2: Subject files, 1945-2010
Series 3: Photographs, 1950-2010
Series 4: Audio/Visual, 1957-2011
Series 5: Printed materials, periodicals and other publications, 1961-2007
Series 1, Personal Papers, consists of a small sample of records offering documentation of Klein’s professional life. Of note, is a photocopy of his application for employment at WFIL, documentation of awards he received, a biographical sketch, and materials related to his teaching and other affiliations with Temple University.
Series 2: Subject Files, consists of collected clippings, ephemera, printed materials, and publications pertaining to corporations, organizations, and topics in which Klein was interested and/or connected. There are materials generally about broadcast television, and more specifically about Gateway Communications, Police Athletic League, and National Association of Television Program Executives.
Series 3: Photographs, includes images of Klein at different times in his life, including television programs and sets, events he attended, and posing with major league baseball players, actors, musicians, philanthropists, politicians, and others. Specifically, researchers will see images of Klein with James Tate, Lyndon Johnson, Walter and Leonore Annenberg, Milton Beryl, Warren Burger, Joseph Clark, Tim McCarver, Dick Clark, Eugene Ormandy, Perry Como, Louis Armstrong, Gary Maddox, Joe Frazier, Richie Ashburn, and Richard Nixon. The photographs are arranged in two groups: chronological and alphabetically by subject.
Series 4: Audiovisual, primarily consists of footage featuring Klein at various award banquets, including the Temple University Alumni in the Media Awards, events, and interviews.
Series 5: Printed materials, periodicals and other publications, predominantly includes periodicals and newsletters, pamphlets, and books related to media and the entertainment industries, with a heavy emphasis on television. It also includes event programs and other ephemera pertaining to fundraisers and banquets benefitting Philadelphia cultural institutions and broadcast television. Of note are numerous published materials by the National Association of Television Program Executives, with which Klein was intimately connected. Materials are arranged alphabetically by publisher. Note that there is some overlap in content with Series 2: Subject files.
