Biographical Note
Born in 1927, Lewis Klein began his career in television in 1950. He directed and produced a wide variety of programs for Philadelphia’s WFIL-TV (now WPVI-TV) Channel 6, including the Sally Starr Show, Romper Room, Philadelphia Phillies telecasts, Stump the Stars, Here Comes the Doodletown Pipers, and Bandstand. He also helped create Captain Noah’s Magical Ark, a popular children’s show.

A founder of the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), Klein also founded the NATPE Educational Foundation. He served on civic boards, including the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia, Cheltenham Art Center, American Heart Association, and Corporate Alliance for Drug Education.  He was president of Gateway Communications.

Klein was a faculty member of the English Department of the University of Pennsylvania and has been Adjunct Professor in the Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Mass Media Department, School of Communications at Temple University. He co-authored Broadcast Cable Programming, a textbook.

Klein received honors and awards from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, NATPE, Broadcast Education Association, the Philadelphia Police Athletic League, and Temple University.  In 2017, Temple University's college of media and communication became the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication, named in his honor.  Lew Klein died on June 12, 2019.
