Detailed Collection Information

Historical Note
In 1947, Samuel Mink (1909-1969) bought the Center City Philadelphia seafood restaurant, Kelly’s, on Mole Street, located at 5 South Mole. In 1969, urban renewal forced the closure of businesses along that block of Mole Street. Kelly’s on Mole served its last lunch in June of that year. Mink purchased and began renovating a new location for the restaurant at 1620-26 Ludlow Street, but died in September, two months prior to the reopening. David Mink, Sam’s son, ran Kelly’s at the new Ludlow location until 1973 when it was sold. In May 1976, David Mink opened Sansom Street Oyster House at 1516 Sansom Street and in 1981, Dockside Fish Company at 8th and Locust Streets. Dockside closed in 1987. With Boston Brewing Company founder Jim Koch, Mink opened Sam Adams Brew House above the Sansom Street Oyster House in 1989. The Brew House operated until 1999. Mink sold Sansom Street Oyster House in 2000 to the restaurant’s executive chef, Cary Neff, but retained ownership of the building. Neff operated the restaurant for 8 years. After renovating the Sansom Street building in 2008-2009, David’s son, Sam Mink relaunched the restaurant in 2009 as Oyster House.

Description of Collection
The Mink Family Restaurants Records collection documents all six of the restaurants owned and operated by the Mink family in Center City Philadelphia. The bulk of the collection is dated 1969 to 2000 and contains little documentation from the earliest years of operation of the family’s first restaurant, Kelly’s on Mole Street. Although there is limited documentation of the business operations of the restaurants, there is extensive publicity materials, visual documentation such as photographs of the interior and exterior of the restaurants and events, and architectural plans for renovations made to the restaurant buildings between 1969 and 2009. Other records include correspondence, financial statements, restaurant menus, fliers, matchbooks, and related ephemera. This collection includes preserved versions of the organization’s websites, available through Archive-It.

Organization and Arrangement
The collection is arranged into 7 series as follows:

Series 1: Kelly’s on Mole Street, 1935-1970
Series 2: Kelly’s Oyster House on Ludlow, 1968-1973
Series 3: Sansom Street Oyster House, 1976-2005
Series 4: Dockside Fish Company, 1981-1984
Series 5: Sam Adams Brew House, 1989-2000
Series 6: Oyster House, 2008-2009

Series 1: Kelly’s on Mole Street, 1935-1970, contains correspondence, menus, photographs, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and some limited financial records related to the operation of the first Mink family owned restaurant. Also included in this series is a file on the Philadelphia Delaware Valley Restaurant Association sponsored Policemen’s Community Service Award Dinner of which Samuel Mink served as chairmen of the awards committee in 1968 and 1969. There is limited documentation from the earliest years of operation of the restaurant. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 2: Kelly’s Oyster House on Ludlow, 1968-1973, contains newspaper clippings, menus, correspondence from customers, postcards, and fliers. Also included are files and architectural drawings on the renovations made to the building at 1620-26 Ludlow Street by D. R. Kogan Brothers prior to the restaurant’s move from Mole Street in 1969. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 3: Sansom Street Oyster House, 1976-2005, is the largest in the collection and contains an employee manual, financial statements, menus, newspaper clippings, photographs, press releases, awards, architectural plans by Floss Barber Inc. for renovations made to the 1516 Sansom Street building in 1999-2000, and other printed material and ephemera related to the restaurant. Some of the records in this series were generated during the period when Cary Neff, not the Mink family, owned the restaurant. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 4: Dockside Fish Company, 1981-1984, is limited to newspaper clippings, publications, and a matchbook. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 5: Sam Adams Brew House, 1989-2000, contains correspondence, ephemera, newspaper clippings, photographs, and press releases. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.

Series 6: Oyster House, 2008-2009, consists solely of the design development plans and construction plans by Brett Weber Architects for the renovations to the building at 1516 Sansom Street prior to its opening as Oyster House in 2009. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.
