The collection also contains sixty-five diaries (1900-1955), newspaper clippings, reviews, pamphlets, memorabilia, advertisements, receipts, photographs, and prints. A newer accession of materials includes correspondence and legal agreements related to Royde-Smith's writings, as well as two letters to author Sylvia Lynd.

Organization and Arrangement

The collection is arranged into 11 series as follows:

Series 1: Diaries, 1900-1955, undated
Series 2: Correspondence, 1886-1955, undated
Series 3: Manuscripts and working papers, 1929-1957, undated
Series 4: Articles written by Naomi Royde-Smith, 1947-1954
Series 5: Advertisements and reviews of works by Naomi Royde-Smith, 1929-1956
Series 6: Works by other authors, 1925-1949, undated
Series 7: Newsclippings, booklets, etc. about people, undated
Series 8: Personal files, 1912-1914, undated
Series 9: Photographs, 1861-1952, undated
Series 10: Prints and oversize items, 1926, undated
Series 11: Accession 1884-1785, 1924-1978

Series 1, Diaries, contains 69 diaries, address books, and autograph books. Most diaries are in English or a combination of English and French. While some books have very bare entries, others are very full and record discussions, original poems, ideas for books, travel, addresses, as well as books read, plays seen, restaurants visited, and exhibits attended. Earlier diaries cover Royde-Smith’s active social life. After her marriage in 1926 entries tend to be briefer. Glimpses, of life in England before and during two World Wars, and life in her social circle, are recorded.

Series 2, Correspondence, contains communication with many of the well-known people of Royde-Smith’s day: authors, actors, playwrights, and publishers. Many offer comments, criticism, and suggestions for her work, and likewise inform her of their activities. Additionally, she corresponded with many family members and friends, so glimpses of her private life, travels, religious feelings, health, and mundane worries and cares can be seen. Fragments of life and fears during the two world wars are seen, from letters explaining censorship in books to comments about plane crashes, Nazi captures, and air raids. Royde-Smith used some of the correspondence she received, particularly post cards, to illustrate the binders and exercise books in which she wrote her manuscripts. Some correspondence likewise was glued into her diaries. Such correspondence can be found in Series 1 and Series 3.

Series 3, Manuscripts and working papers, contains manuscripts and working papers arranged into published works, translations, unpublished works, and miscellaneous manuscripts. Royde-Smith used numerous copy books or exercise books for her writings; many of the manuscripts in this collection are her handwritten exercise books. Occasionally Royde-Smith used, at least on manuscripts, the pseudonyms A. N. Jawnes, Jownes, or Jones.

Series 4, Articles written by Naomi Royde-Smith, contains articles and reviews that were published in Blackfriars, a monthly magazine, and Time and Tide. Entire magazines have been preserved here.

Series 5, Advertisements and reviews of works by Naomi Royde-Smith, contains publishers’ advertisements announcing forthcoming books and plays by Royde-Smith, and reviews of her works from England and America; press service cuttings as well as actual newsclippings saved by Royde-Smith or sent to her by friends. Some of the advertisements contains one-line blurbs and quotes from reviews.

Series 6, Works by other authors, contains poems and articles by other authors as well as reviews of their works. It is possible that some of these were considered for publication in the Westminster Gazette or in an anthology; see Series 3, Manuscripts and working papers, for other works published and/or considered for publication in her anthologies.

Series 7, Newsclippings, booklets, etc. about people, contains clippings of friends, acquaintances, and newsworthy people. Royde-Smith particularly kept the published obituaries of friends, oftentimes tipping such items into her diaries. Those items listed here were loose clippings, many of which had been placed, not glued, into the diaries.

Series 8, Personal files, contains collected miscellaneous clippings, sayings, notices, and receipts. Among the more important items are a book dealer’s catalog, library call slips, and a catalog of books at Primrose Hill, apparently the collection of Naomi Royde-Smith and Ernest Milton. Also, a short compiled book of teachers’(?) criticism of Royde-Smith’s writing, probably a gift from one of her sisters. Additionally, there are ticket stubs and clippings on subjects that interested Royde-Smith: religion, music, and the theater.

Series 9, Photographs, covers the lifespan of Naomi Royde-Smith: infant, young woman, and adult are represented. Some pictures are identified, but few are dated. Some may have been publicity photographs and were used on the dust jackets of her books. There are also photographs of Ernest Milton, her husband; 3 photos of Aldous Huxley and family; many shots of unidentified people; and a few unidentified interior views. Some photographs were removed from diaries in Series 1. A more detailed list of photographs can be found in the collection control file in the Special Collections Research Center.

Series 10, Prints and oversize items, contains art prints, and magazine and newspaper pieces.

Series 11, Accession 1884-1785, contains correspondence and legal agreements related to Royde-Smith's writings, as well as two letters to author Sylvia Lynd.

Series 2: Correspondence, 1886-1955, undated
