Detailed Collection Information
Nochem S. Winnet was born August 6, 1898, in Augustowo, Poland, as Nochem Winitsky. He immigrated to the United States in 1905. He attended school in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and received a bachelor’s degree in 1920 and law degree in 1923 from Harvard. He practiced law in Philadelphia until 1940 when Governor Arthur H. James appointed him to the Philadelphia Municipal Court. Winnet was a founding member of the Crime Prevention Association of Philadelphia and served as its president from 1940 to 1960. He chaired the Fair Rent Committee of the Philadelphia Council of Defense from 1941 to 1942, was president of the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia from 1962 to 1965 and the Samuel S. Fels Fund from 1963 to 1990. Nochem S. Winnet died March 14, 1990.
Description of Collection
The Nochem S. Winnet Papers consist of approximately 500 speeches Winnet gave during his career and reflect organizations he was associated with, including the Crime Prevention Association of Philadelphia, the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia, and institutions funded by the Samuel S. Fels Fund. Speech topics include crime prevention, juvenile delinquency and the juvenile court system, child welfare, Jewish life and culture, housing and rent control, the Philadelphia legal community, and police work. Later speeches include eulogies, building dedications, tributes, and honorary award presentations. A few speeches are authored by associates of Winnet. A small number of articles authored by Winnet and press releases are interfiled among the speeches. Also included in the collection is an unpublished typescript on juvenile delinquency titled "Children in Trouble;" correspondence regarding Winnet’s autobiography Vignettes of a Lucky Life; newspaper clippings; photographs, and a file on Winnet’s estate.
