Detailed Collection Information 
Biographical Note
Siegfried Dortort was born in Basel, Switzerland on May 8, 1907 to Edward and Yetta Dortort. Siegfried had eight siblings, Oscar, Frieda, Louise, Isadore, Fannie, Albert, Bertha, and Josephine. The Dortort family immigrated to the United States in 1913, settling on 5th Street in South Philadelphia. Siegfried attended Central High School and West Philadelphia High School and took classes at Samuel Fleisher's Graphic Sketch Club. Siegfried married Rose Balis on September 1, 1928.
Description of Collection 
The collection consists of three personal and two travel diaries, correspondence, family photographs, and ephemera documenting Siegfried Dortort’s early childhood in Basel, Switzerland, his life in Philadelphia, and his travels abroad. One of the diaries, began on his wedding day contains entries written by both Siegfried and his wife, Rose.
