Biographical Note
William A. K. Martin was a Philadelphia-born landscape, marine, and historical painter, whose work, Palermo, was shown at the Pennsylvania Academy in1853.

Description of Collection
This collection houses incoming and/or outgoing correspondence and other records of several members of William A. K. Martin and his family. There are letters from his father, Captain John Martin; his brother, James F. Martin, a Philadelphia merchant dealing in wheat, oil, sugar, mackerel, and iron; and his son, William A. K. Martin. Other relatives represented include Frances Martin and Eleanor Furlong. Most of the letters offer discussion of family members’ day to day life and business interests. William A. K. Martin's interests in European painting and his relationships with artists in Nicaragua and Cuba are reflected in the letters he received.
