Detailed Collection Information
Historical Note
The Cooperative High School Independent Press Syndicate (CHIPS) was founded in 1969 as the Chicago Area High School Independent Press Service. As it grew, the syndicate provided articles and graphics for its member publications (generally underground high school publications), and members could exchange copies of their papers. Although the great majority of participants were from across the United States, there were several members in Canada and New Zealand. CHIPS members published FPS: A Magazine of Young People's Liberation, which consisted mainly of news articles written by staff members and available for reprint by any member.
CHIPS merged with Youth Liberation of Ann Arbor in 1972, and became the Youth Liberation Press. Youth Liberation was founded by Keith Hefner in 1970, and existed until 1979. The Youth Liberation Press published books and pamphlets, including "Student and Youth Organizing." "Young People and the Law," "High School Women Liberation," and “Growing Up Gay.”

The focus of the materials is on the issues of draft resistance, racism, women's rights, gay rights, and secondary education.
