Detailed Collection Information

Historical Note
In the summer of 1974, former residents of the Association for Jewish Children, an institutional foster home, child care, and adoption placement agency previously known as the Foster Home for Hebrew Orphans and located at 700 East Church Lane in the Germantown section of Philadelphia organized the 700 East Alumni Association. The association organized day trips, brunches, and an annual “Pop” Weiser dinner dance and reunion, which commemorated the late shoemaker who worked at the foster home. Association members were often referred to as “home guys” or “home kids.” During its tenure, the association published The Caribou, a quarterly newsletter named for the wrought-iron reindeer that once stood in front of foster home, as a means of sharing memories and maintaining contact with other alumni.

Description of Collection
The collection consists of materials gathered by alumni of the Foster Home for Hebrew Orphans and Association for Jewish Children including film footage of activities in the 1930s and early 1940s at the foster home’s property. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs of residents, staff, and the grounds of the foster home primarily from the 1940s and 1950s as well as photographs of alumni reunions and gatherings. Also included is the alumni association newsletter, The Caribou, obituaries for former residents, newspaper clippings, and correspondence between alumni association members, most notably Ed and Annabelle Friedman and Alfred and Miriam Greenstein.
