Historical Note

The Jane D. Kent-St. Nicholas Day Care Center was formed in August 1961 by a merger of two independent day nurseries, the Jane D. Kent Day Nursery and the St. Nicholas Day Nursery of the City of Philadelphia.

The St. Nicholas Day Nursery was chartered in March 1910 to care for "young colored children of working mothers," many of whom usually came from homes with single parents, often domestic or factory workers. The nursery also administered programs for women and high school girls. Originally located at 265 South 10th Street, the nursery relocated in 1926 to 328 South 12th Street, and two years later it settled at 2218 Lombard Street. St. Nicholas became a racially integrated nursery in 1946.

The Jane D. Kent Day Nursery, established in January 1885, was originally located at 302 North 16th Street and moved to 1622 Summer Street as a result of the Vine Street widening project in the 1940s. Its goals were to provide shelter, food and care as well as religious instruction to the children of white working class parents. Due to a declining number of children in the community surrounding the Jane D. Kent Day Nursery, the two day nurseries merged their services into the existing St. Nicholas facility in 1961, as the Jane D. Kent-St. Nicholas Day Care Center.

The Jane D. Kent-St. Nicholas Day Care Center was a member of the United Way of Philadelphia and the Health and Welfare Council, Inc., as well as the Philadelphia Association of Day Nurseries, of which the Jane D. Kent Day Nursery was a founding member.

Description of Collection

The bulk of the collection consists of records created by the combined day care center. The premerger records are predominantly of the St. Nicholas Day Nursery. Many of Jane D. Kent's early records were not retained by the combined day care center. The early records of Jane D. Kent in the collection are so identified.

Organization and Arrangement

This collection has been arranged into five series:

Series 1: Administrative, 1886-1979
Series 2: Financial, 1918-1980
Series 3: Operational, circa 1910-1976
Series 4: Case Files, 1970-1975 (Restricted)
Series 5: Other Organizations, 1925-1974 (Portions restricted)

Series 1. Administrative, 1886-1978. The administrative records consist of annual reports of both the day nurseries; charters and by laws; reports, correspondence, and memoranda of the executive director, mostly during the tenure of Helen V. Lockwood Johnson (1960s); committee reports, including the Board of Directors; and Daily Roll Books for the children in attendance.

Series 2. Financial, 1948-1978. Includes audits, bills, budgets, deeds, financial reports, miscellaneous funding reports, salary information, financial statements, and correspondence with governmental agencies regarding funding.

Series 3. Operational, 1910-1975. This series consists of files relating to the operational aspects of running a day care center, including statistics to and files about coordinating agencies, education, food services, general histories, job descriptions, and volunteers.

Series 4. Case Files, 1970-1975. Selected case files of children enrolled in the Day Care Center, mostly around 1975. The case files include medical and psychological evaluations of the children, background information on the parents, including family histories, work experiences, and financial earnings. Materials in this series are restricted. Contact the Special Collections Research Center for information.

Series 5. Other Organizations, 1932-1974. Includes correspondence, reports, and minutes of numerous agencies that worked with the Day Care Center, including the Health and Welfare Council, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, the United Fund, and selected case files of the Woman's Union Day Nurseries. Womens Union Day Nursery Case Records in this series are restricted. Contact the Special Collections Research Center for information.
