Historical Note
The Upholsterers' International Union of North America was formed in 1882, reorganized in 1892, and was chartered by the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1900. The union represents workers in the furniture, mattress and bedding, and casket industries, as well as window trimmers and display installers. In 1937, due to internal disputes, several union locals and an estimated 7,500 members split from the union to form the rival United Furniture Workers of America. Despite the split the union continued to thrive. The union increased from 20,000 members in 1937 to 30,000 members in 120 locals by June 1940. By the mid-1970s the union had approximately 60,000 members organized in 176 locals nationwide.
Description of Collection
Most photographs deal with activities of the union involving banquets, conventions, meetings, Executive and Pension Board, and office workers. Includes extensive photography of the Salhaven community and President Sal B. Hoffman. Also includes a small number of images of union members at work and on strike and portraits of William Kohn and Al Rota. Photographers include Paul Almquist, Alexander Archer, J. Sam Johnson, Mort Kaye Studios, Larson Studio, Mike Maicher, Sam R. Quincey, Maurice Robbins, B. Kenneth Roberts, Standard Photo Service.
