Student Library Advisory Board

Now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 academic year! Please apply by September 15, 2023.

About the Board

The Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB) was created to establish an ongoing, open dialog between Temple University students and the University Libraries staff and administration. The board is an opportunity for Temple students to participate in the development of new library services and spaces and to ensure that the library meets the needs of Temple’s student body.

The board is composed of undergraduate and graduate students who represent the various opinions and concerns of the student body regarding the libraries. Student members are expected to be well-informed on University issues and to represent their personal views, as well as those that represent the wider campus student opinion.

The board includes the Dean of the Libraries, the User Experience Librarian, the Coordinator of Learning and Student Success, and 5 students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input on new or existing library services, spaces, resources, policies, and programming
  • Share insight about students’ needs and how the library can better support those needs
  • Attend and actively participate in five to six Advisory Board meetings during the fall and spring terms (remotely or in-person)
  • Meet with the Library Leadership Council once per year
  • Be available for at least 10-15 hours per semester for work on special assignments and projects

Special Projects/Assignments

The user experience librarian and student success librarian will work with individual members to help them identify areas of interest for special projects. Areas of activity might include:

  • Promoting digital literacy
  • Collaborating with library staff and other student advisory board members on existing library projects or initiatives. Board members may work directly with individual library staff, departments, or teams on existing projects or form their own subcommittees to explore and implement service improvements.
  • Participating in or assisting with user research such as focus groups, usability testing, and surveys.
  • Developing and advocating for new and emerging services. Present and/or collaborate in the design of new services to meet student needs.

Stipends and other information

  • Five students will be selected to serve on the board per academic year. Student members are appointed for a one-year term, with the opportunity to renew.
